  17. <p>     Patricia Ireland doesn't like labels, but there's one she
  18. can't escape: controversial. Last week the longtime women's
  19. rights activist, who is about to become president of the
  20. National Organization for Women, explained that in addition to
  21. her husband of 25 years, she has a female companion "who is also
  22. very important in my life." But the 46-year-old lawyer refused
  23. to call herself a lesbian or bisexual. "I've never hidden how
  24. I've lived my life," Ireland told the Advocate, the
  25. gay-and-lesbian biweekly. "What I don't like is the idea that
  26. people try to categorize other people by their sexuality."
